Tragic Loss: Newlywed Couple Involved in Tragic Car Crash Hours After Wedding in Cape May
Cape May, NJ – May 31, 2025 — What began as a day filled with love and celebration ended in unimaginable heartbreak, as a newlywed couple was involved in a devastating car crash just hours after their wedding ceremony in Cape May.
The couple, whose names have not yet been publicly released pending family notification, had tied the knot earlier Friday in an intimate beachfront ceremony surrounded by friends and family. As they left their reception venue late that evening, their vehicle crashed along a quiet stretch of Ocean Drive, near Sunset Boulevard.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after 9:45 PM to find the vehicle had veered off the roadway and struck a large tree. Authorities report that one of the newlyweds was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
Cape May Police Chief Lisa Rowan expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event. “Our hearts break for this couple and their loved ones. What should have been the happiest day of their lives has ended in tragedy no one could have foreseen,” she said in a brief press conference Saturday morning.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash. There were no signs of foul play, and weather conditions were reported to be clear at the time. Early reports suggest a possible mechanical issue or sudden medical emergency may have been involved.
Photos shared earlier that day on social media showed the couple smiling and celebrating their union, with the ocean and Cape May’s iconic historic backdrop behind them. The sudden and tragic end to their day has left family, friends, and the local community in deep mourning.
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Saturday evening at Rotary Park, where residents and guests are expected to gather in remembrance and support. Local grief counselors and clergy have volunteered their time to help those affected cope with the loss.
The investigation remains ongoing. Police urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact the Cape May Police Department at (609) XXX-XXXX.
